Magnetic fishing was an enjoyable experience for all involved. With the right location and equipment, the things you can pull out of the water are almost endless.

2. How to choose fishing magnets?

Magnets used for magnet fishing are usually made of neodymium, a very strong and durable material that is considered a rare earth metal. As the main component of permanent magnets, you can certainly use these giant magnets to pull heavy objects out of the water.

Especially for magnet fishing, they are disc-shaped, very large and thick.

An entry-level magnet would be affordable and not too heavy to manage. The one we chose could lift about 350 lbs (160 kg). It weighs about 1.5 pounds, so it’s really easy to bring with you. And easy for kids to use.

A strength of around 450 lbs is the optimal choice. At this level, you can still pull both your magnet and the cached item up from the water. If you go bigger, you can end up losing your magnet, because you simply can’t pull it up again. 

3. How to use fishing magnets?

First, the magnet you are using needs to have an eyelet so it can be threaded on the string. This can be mounted on the top or side of the magnet, and some magnets allow you to switch positions.

Nylon rope is considered the ideal rope for magnet fishing because it is strong and doesn't have much stretch.

You can either attach the cord directly to the magnet or attach a carabiner to the cord and clip the magnet to it for a slightly different spin. It doesn't make much difference as long as you use a safe knot.

Lastly, cut-resistant gloves are critical to safety, and they will give you better manual dexterity than gloves designed for outdoor work.
